Aachen

Living together without frontiers

Aachen is situated at the meeting point of three countries: Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. It is Germany's most westerly city, with a population of more than 250,000. Nearly 40,000 students attend Aachen's five major colleges and universities (Rhineland-Westphalian Technical University (RWTH), Universtity of Applied Sciences, Academy of Music and Academy of Church Music).

Unity of tradition and progress

Charlemagne has left his mark throughout the city. The cathedral - the first monument in Germany to be included in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list - and the gothic City Hall in which 32 German kings celebrated their coronations still form the heart of Aachen's old city center. And Charlemagne has lent his name to a prize awarded by Aachens citizens to personalities who have rendered outstanding services to European unity: the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen. This award has been presented on Ascension Day every year since 1950.

Attractive technology region

Aachen and the region have always been taking the top positions in the international rankings of business locations. Simultaneously enterprises like Aixtron, Parsytec or FEV Motorentechnik are synonyms for this transition from the traditional mining region to a high-tech location.

Bundling of Activities by Networks

The bundling of forces and the look beyond one's own pose is an additional characteristic of the location Aachen. Many networks have developed in the course of the past years, examples of which are "REGINA e. V." (Regional Industry Club of Informatics Aachen), "CAR e. V." (Competence Center Automotive Region Aachen Euregio Maas-Rhein) and "LifeTecAachen -
Jülich e. V."
