Quo vadis - where is the development of laser beam sources headed?

After having to take a pandemic break of four years, the industrial laser technology community met at “AKL'22 – International Laser Technology Congress” in Aachen from May 4 to 6, 2022. The industry is doing well, and the biggest trend is the extensive digitalization of processes. At the same time, common beam sources are being pushed to ever new levels of peak performance. New to the conference program was the Quantum Technology & Photonics Forum, where major German companies presented an amazing range of topics.

Award winners 2020 & 2022

The Innovation Award Laser Technology is provided with 10 000 € prize money and initiated by the associations Arbeitskreis Lasertechnik e.V. and the European Laser Institute ELI has been conferred to Dr. Boris Regaard, Project Manager at TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH + Co. KG and Stefan Wolf, Head of Research & Development at PRIMES GmbH on May 4, 2022 in Aachen´s Coronation Hall.

Lasers for hydrogen technology – Fraunhofer ILT inaugurates new research platform

The success of the energy transition is closely linked to continued research into hydrogen technologies. A major goal of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT is to make the fuel cell ready for series production. To this end, the Aachen researchers are setting up a hydrogen laboratory on more than 300 square meters of laboratory space: Here, a wide range of laser technology test facilities will offer public projects and industrial cooperation a research platform that is unique in Germany. On May 5, 2022, the new Hydrogen Lab will open its doors for the first time to participants of the “International Laser Technology Congress AKL'22” in Aachen as part of ILT’s biannual event “Laser Technology Live.”

AKL’22: Laser Technology – Productive, Flexible and Smart

From May 4 to 6, 2022, laser manufacturers and users from various industries will meet for the 13th time at the “AKL – International Laser Technology Congress.” Prof. Constantin Häfner, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, is pleased to welcome the laser community live in Aachen for AKL’22, particularly since the congress had to be postponed due to the pandemic. 87 speakers bring participants up to date on the current status and trends in laser technology in production. Whether it’s about productivity increases in additive manufacturing, AI-supported laser systems or networked digital process chains for the smart production of tomorrow, the latest findings of applied research as well as pioneering achievements of the industry will be presented and discussed at AKL’22. Networking at its best – live on site! The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT invites the laser community to the 13th International Laser Technology Congress AKL from May 4 to 6, 2022. Laser manufacturers and users from various industries, experienced experts and newcomers, strategists and practitioners can catch up on the latest developments in the field of applied laser technology in production at AKL'22. Over three conference days, 87 presentations will bring participants up to date on the latest technology and give them insight into current research topics for tomorrow's production solutions. Along with the exhibition accompanying the conference and the live demonstrations at Fraunhofer ILT, the AKL has established itself as the central networking platform for the laser community.

13th “AKL – International Laser Technology Congress”: May 4 to 6, 2022 in Aachen – Laser Technology Live already this year!

Owing to the progressing coronavirus pandemic, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT has decided to cancel the International Laser Technology Congress AKL in 2020. The safety and health of our attendees, partners and employees has top priority for us. The next AKL will take place from May 4 to 6, 2022, thus maintaining its regular biennial rhythm. However, so that interested parties do not have to wait another two years for the live demonstrations in Europe's largest laser system park, which are firmly anchored in the AKL, Fraunhofer ILT intends to open its doors as early as this autumn and in 2021 for various planned symposia in Aachen – provided that the general conditions allow it again.

Gezielt verstärkt: Laserauftragschweißen optimiert den Leichtbau

Eine neue Anwendung für das additive Laserauftragschweißen wollen die Automotive Center Südwestfalen GmbH (acs) aus Attendorn und das Fraunhofer-Institut für Lasertechnik ILT aus Aachen im Verbundprojekt LAVAL angehen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Validierung eines Verfahrens, mit dem sich Stahl- und Aluminiumbleche mit Hilfe des Laserauftragschweißens lokal verstärken lassen. In Grundlagenstudien wurde eine Erhöhung der Lastaufnahme fast um das Dreifache nachgewiesen – bei minimaler Gewichtszunahme. Für LAVAL werden nun Industriepartner mit Problemstellungen aus dem Leichtbau mit Blechwerkstoffen gesucht, für die im Verbundprojekt Lösungen erarbeitet werden sollen.

“Laser Technology Live” at AKL’20 in Aachen and inauguration of new Battery Lab

AKL’20, the 13th edition of the “AKL – International Laser Technology Congress”, will take place in Aachen from May 6–8, 2020. It addresses the entire laser community: from laser manufacturers to experienced users and laser novices. A total of 87 speakers will present examples of innovative solutions from industrial practice and the latest research results, covering all target groups. As an added attraction, the 600-plus participants will be invited to experience “Laser Technology Live” in more than 90 presentations at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, which holds Europe’s largest laser park. The highlight of this year’s event is the inauguration of the institute’s new Battery Lab, which will showcase the use of lasers in the manufacture of battery cells and modules.

AKL’20: Improving productivity through digitization in the laser industry

From May 6 to 8, 2020, laser manufacturers and users from various branches will meet at the AKL’20 for the 13th time. Featuring over 600 participants, 87 speakers and over 50 sponsors and exhibitors, the “AKL – International Laser Technology Congress” has established itself as the leading forum for applied laser technology in Europe. Putting quantum bits into the fiber optic network: Launching the QFC-4-1QID project

Transporting quantum information over long distances with glass fibers and paving the way for the quantum Internet: With this goal in mind, the Dutch research center QuTech and the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT launched the ICON project QFC-4-1QID on September 1, 2019. In this long-term strategic partnership between the research institutions, the scientists will be developing quantum frequency converters that will connect quantum processors to fiber optic networks. The new technology will be used in the world's first quantum Internet demonstrator in 2022.
